Mineral wool, installed at the right depth.
100mm base layer, 200mm top up, 270mm minimum requirement, 300mm our recommendation — laid neatly with proper edge detailing and ventilation.
- Cold upstairs rooms or noticeable heat loss
- Old, compressed or patchy insulation
- Damp, contaminated or pest-affected loft
- Planning boarding and want it done over insulation, not on top

Depths that actually matter.
Mineral wool is the workhorse of UK loft insulation — but only when it's laid at the right depth, in the right way.
- • 100mm — base layer between the joists
- • 200mm — top up laid across the joists
- • 270mm — current UK minimum recommendation
- • 300mm — our recommendation for a noticeably warmer loft
A properly insulated loft reduces heat loss through the roof and improves comfort. Exact bill savings vary — we won't pretend otherwise.
What "done properly" actually means
- 1. Continuous depth — no thin patches around edges
- 2. Maintained ventilation at the eaves
- 3. Pipes and tanks lagged correctly
- 4. Insulation not crushed by storage or boarding
- 5. Hatch and access detailed neatly

What depth should my insulation be?+
Current guidance is around 270mm of mineral wool for typical UK lofts. We'll measure what's there and recommend honestly.
Can you board over insulation?+
Yes — using a raised boarding system that preserves depth. See our boarding page.
Do you remove the old stuff?+
If it's compressed, damp, contaminated or vermin-affected, yes. Otherwise we may top up cleanly.
